Lighting installation for M18 bar.
BlackScape is a lighting installation for the M18 bar located near the Bund. The clients redecorated the interior space and wanted a lighting installation above the bar counter to increase attractiveness. On one side of bar counter, people would see the scenery of the Bund. The skyscrapers, as symbols of modernization, made us want to create something different from the city environment but also meet clients’ needs at the same time.
What inspired us was the shape of abstract landscape from nature, like mountains or lakes. Furthermore, as this is a site-specific installation, we considered the fact that music played an important role in the bar, so we tried to simulate the rhythm in our installation.
The scheme was based on certain rules of scaling and rotating. We designed a thin and long basic panel to create a smooth feeling of the overall shape. The panels were rotated at 10 degrees, creating a rhythm of natural composition. And each panel was enlarged or shrunk to create a flow, which made this installation more abstract and attractive.
In this project, I participated in light installation design and construction design.
